KANBAN TRAINING
This 1-day hands-on course prepares your team to use the Kanban technique effectively to achieve higher levels of productivity.
You will learn how Kanban is an adaptive system, how it can be applied to your product development workflow, and how it differs from other development methods.
The Kanban Training course begins with an historical perspective on Kanban. Kanban is a method emerging from Lean manufacturing. The true power of Kanban is that it allows each team member to focus on one work item at a time all the way to “done”. The cost of context switching within your organization can be massive. However, the use of Kanban WIP Limits recovers this waste and re-applies it to delivering value.
Kanban’s 4 foundational principles are covered briefly. Then, Kanban’s 6 core practices are covered in detail with a lesson on each: visualize workflow, limit work in progress, manage flow, make process policies explicit, implement feedback loops, and improve collaboratively (Kaizen).
Kanban teams use different metrics than Scrum teams to measure predictability and performance. The Kanban metrics are covered, including an online simulation of how these metrics are impacted when WIP Limits are adjusted.
Advanced topics include identification and removal of bottlenecks, swim lanes, class of service, and sub-activities. Kanban does not prescribe any set roles. But, the instructor will describe the typical roles and events most Kanban teams use to collaborate effectively. These roles and events all the Kanban team to remain synchronized around the flow of value.
KANBAN SIMULATION
An additional online simulation will be used. This simulation will show how to optimize the delivery of value in three ways. Firstly, through swarming. Secondly, use of WIP Limits. And thirdly, prioritization of the smallest work items with highest business value. A major learning point discussed is that each decision we make on a development team impacts the bottom line.
The Kanban Training course ends with a sub-team exercise. During this activity, each team builds their work Kanban. This artifact can be taken back to the workplace and used as a start on your Kanban journey! Upon completion of the course, the attendee will be ready to implement the Kanban agile method in his/her organization with confidence.
The class instructor has more than 18-years experience using Agile and Kanban. He will share case studies, situational advice, and practical application recommendations throughout the course.
